My Space and Windows and Java...Oh My!

Computer Lingo = A Lost MyADHDMe.

Chatty Kelly and I were talking about a video clip from You Tube the other day. She commented that it had gone Viral.

Viral?????

She explained to me what it meant in computer terms. I also looked it up on Wikipedia, "A viral video is a video clip that gains widespread popularity through the process of internet sharing."

OK.....so it became well-liked, popular, trendy, famous, faddish.

It made me start thinking of all of the computer lingo that has, quite often, left me staring at the person talking about it, with a glazed zoned out look on my face (unlike the typical zoned out look)....completely oblivious to what they are talking about.

It all started back when people started talking about computer viruses. My dictionary defines a virus as "an ultramicroscopic (20-300 nm in diameter) metabolically inert, infections agent that replicates ONLY within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants and animals; composed of an RNA or DNA core, a protein coat and in more complex types a surrounding envelope"

(I think I need a dictionary for my dictionary)

So, ok, I guess it makes sense to call "a segment of self-replicating codes planted illegally in a computer program, often to damage or shut down a system or network", a virus.....even though it makes me nervous because virus' ONLY replicate within the cells of living hosts.

OK, I'm completely confused now just from reading what I've written so far.

Monkeys Are Funny.

I'm switching channels here. My main idea here (and you thought I didn't have one) is that if the world of computers is so advanced and savvy, then why can't they come up with new words to describe things. It isn't just computers either. I'm talking about technology in general.

A few examples:

A mouse = a small rodent that scurries around looking for bread crumbs.
My Space - My Room
Hardware = Purchased at a HARDWARE store...ie nuts, bolts, screws.....
Java = Coffee
Dial-Up = What you did on grandma's rotary phone.
RAM = What my son did with his car when he hit the other car(s).
Disk = Frisbee
Windows = Glass covered holes in the walls of your house to look outside, (remember outside?)
Server = The girl or guy that brings you your food at a resturant.
Menu = What you looked at so you could tell the "server" what you wanted to eat.
Blackberry / Blueberry = Same family as Raspberry and Strawberry
Cut & Paste = Scissors and Glue
Cookies = Dessert.
Motherboard = I'm not quite sure but it sounds like a word from Star trek or a major insult.
Home = Your House.
PDF = Pretty Darn Funny
Twitter & Tweet = The sounds the birds are making outside the "WINDOWS" .

I'm sure the list goes on, but you get my idea...don't you? Of COURSE you do!
you silly goose......hhhmmmm....

Goose = Internet jargon for posts that don't make sense.

(ok, maybe not)

So funny. And I bet you could have quite a bit of fun with my post today.

I'm kinda scared to even tell you about it! :-0

Well done!! Such fun!!

Remember when 'PC' was "politically correct"?

'Networks' were a series of TV stations.

'Hubs' was slang for a group of husbands.

'Mouse pads'--where mice lived in the late 60s/early 70s.

'Office' was where you went to work. Nowadays, that's often home.

I think you're on to another something, as if the word verification thing wasn't funny enough.

Rock 'n' scroll, babe!

Thanx for the follow & kind words.
You forgot DRAG-N-DROPS. It depends on what the dragon had for lunch...
The REAL first digital computer was the fingers we used when learning too add.
We computer NERDS chose familiar terms so as to not alienate the new users. Too much insider lingo and jargon makes it harder for newbies. We were lonely and hoping to attract friends. And look what happened next.
Real virii and computer virii, share the same traits. Neither will do anything unless they can get inside a live(in computer terms EXECUTABLE CODE or Program) host. A really affective virus will not harm its host. It will only replicate and spread to new hosts. Some virii do kill the host. But then they can no longer spread or replicate.
Thus endeth the lesson. Hopefully it was helpful.

I loved this post. Great job! LOL!

I'd write more but I just got home from Busch Gardens and I am exhausted. So I'll talk to you tomorrow.

Apple = The fruit that the serpent enticed Eve with and caused the downfall of man. (Actually the bible doesn't say what kind of fruit it was but we all know it was an Apple.)

I was just reading your comments and cracking up at the explanation that KW left because I was sure you got lost in there somewhere. Then I read your response. Still laughing. LOL!

The original computer cracked me up!

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't know that was the meaning of Viral either. I thought it was a bad thing like going Postal, only on video. :)

You're so fun!

I suspect you got lost here...
"in computer terms EXECUTABLE CODE or Program".

Sorry, visualizing that dazed look on your face and still laughing.

I apologize for using insider jargon. By program I mean Microsoft Word.exe, as opposed to one of the documents you create using that program. Or Firefox.exe, not the www.darnoldwebsite.com page you read it with. I will try to be more sophomoric when explaining technical info. Chalk it up to revenge of the nerds.
pardon mon français, s'il vous plaît.

Sorry I couldn't leave well enough alone.
Virus, worms, Spam, trojans, phishing, hooks, monitor, bits, bytes and nibbles are also part of the lexicon of computerdom borrowed from reality. it really is a conspiracy and I was sent to add to the confusion.

I hate talking to the IT guy at work because I feel so dumb. I don't speak his language. and he knows he's superior.

KW- lol. It's ok, you have now entered the world of ADHD.
My domain.
I suspect there will be a glazed look on your face at some point or another.

(just don't start on Lenux....puts me in a coma)
