Today Is Tuesday. You Know What That Means... 2-17-09

Today is Tuesday.
You know what that means.
We're gonna have a special GUEST!!!!!

I guess it is pretty obvious to you all by now, that I LOVE musicals. (Sorry, Linda at 2nd cup of coffee, but the truth must come out).

This next clip is from one of my favorites...yes, I know I always say that whatever clip I am playing is from one of my favorites, but well, they are.

ANYWAY, it is kind of long, (passes the 3 to 3 1/2 min mark) but If you have seen this movie, you will probably love watching it, but if you haven't seen the movie, it may seem odd to you.

If you don't want to watch the whole thing, then at least fast forward to the 4 minute spot. Look at his expression when he sings about studying the Bible. His love for it seems SO intense.

My other favorite part is right at the end when he is singing to God and asks, "Would it spoil some vast eternal plan...If I were a wealthy man?!"

Trivia:
The movie Fiddler on the Roof was released in 1971.
It won 3 Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globes.
It was first made into a Broadway musical in 1964 that was based on the book, written in Yiddish by Sholem Aleichem in 1894.
The Broadway production won NINE Tony Awards.
(Although not in this clip, if you watch this movie, you may notice that Perchik is played by Starsky (Michael Glaser) from the TV series Starsky and Hutch.

My Trivia- I LOVE the power and feeling that this actor, Chain Topol, puts into his acting and singing, as the character Tevye.

This brings back a very clear memory for me. When I was about 10 years old my parents took us to NYC and we say this on Broadway. I absolutely loved it. I left my purse in the theater that day and miraculously got it back. I don't beleive I've left my purse anywhere since. ; )

Beverly YouWho- I would LOVE to see this on Broadway. I once went to a High School Production of it and even loved that!

SPOILER ANNOUNCEMENT NUMBER 2- Tomorrow is my Pay it Forward post.
For those of you who would just LOVE to receive a home-made craft from a COMPLETELY NON-CRAFTING individual, (note I said non-crafting--not Non-Crafty), be sure to leave a comment tomorrow.

I won twice so I have to make 6!!

P.S. I guarantee you WON'T be able to re-sell it on e-bay!

Why is a Jewish man singing about the Bible and not the Torah?

Loved the song.

I've never seen this movie but I need to. I love musicals and this one keeps being brought to my attention lately.

CK - He's not singing about the Bible. He did mention the Holy Books but that would be the Torah and other Jewish books. And the old testament is the Jewish Holy Books.

Looking forward to your PIF post! I won't play cause I already did and that might just create a never ending loop which could then result in a downward spiral and that would be no good. But I'll watch and maybe even recruit players. Ha!

Taken from http://www.jewfaq.org/torah.htm:
The word "Torah" is a tricky one, because it can mean different things in different contexts. In its most limited sense, "Torah" refers to the Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. But the word "torah" can also be used to refer to the entire Jewish bible (the body of scripture known to non-Jews as the Old Testament and to Jews as the Tanakh or Written Torah), or in its broadest sense, to the whole body of Jewish law and teachings.

I should watch this whole musical again, because it is really deep. Barbra Streisand tried to pour "Fiddler" into "Yentl," but that didn't mix up so good.

The faith struggles, the family struggles....there's a lot to which we can relate, even now. And, yes, this role truly only belongs to Topol, much in the same way we'll only see Yul Brenner in The King and I.

Mazel tov!

Edie- yes, you MUST watch this movie. It is SO good and Topol (the man in the clip) plays the part amazingly. There are so many songs in this movie that I love that I had a hard time choosing. There is one that they sing called the Sabbath prayer that I may play on a Saturday.

(secret-I have the CD...actually I think it is a cassette)

P.S. I have an idea. I'll get a copy of the movie...actually I may have one I made on my VCR. I'll get some popcorn, and you come over and we'll watch it together!

Sue J- I never saw Yentl but have meant to watch it one day.
You're right about Topol. He was just outstanding!!

Kelly- Maybe if he wasn't talking about the Torah, he was thinking of the Old testament....oh no...I hope I didn't just open the flood gates for contraversy!!

Okay, obviously I didn't watch the whole clip, just taking ADHD's word when she said "Look at his expression when he sings about studying the Bible." My attention span isn't long enough to get past the 3 minute mark, remember?

I do love the song, but I tried to watch the whole movie once and it wasn't my cup of tea (or coffee).

By the way, can you imagine writing the lyrics for that one? bitty bitty bum, dibble dibble, Idle diddle (Whatever). And it became a hit! (so to speak). LOL!

CK- I knew that this was one movie you wouldn't care for, (not sure how I knew, I just did).

HOWEVER, you are still invited to join Edie and I when she comes over to watch it. I'll have the popcorn and diet coke. You better bring the coffee as I would have no idea what kind to get.

I LOVE Fiddler On The Roof! Tevye (or rather Topol!) is wonderful! Great facial expressions. And wonderful songs. Lidna and I have many similarities, but here's our vast difference.

I'll be right there! Don't worry CK, I'll make sure to have coffee ready. I'll even pick up your Starbucks beverage of choice. :)

I didn't notice that ADHD-Jo said Bible. I was wondering what made you think he was singing about the Bible. I even went back and skimmed through the song a 2nd time to see if I missed it! Haha!!
