Mothers of Teenagers Know Why Some Animals Eat Their Young

It all started out as a typical afternoon. JM, my 17 year old son, is a senior in high school. He gets out of school early every day for work release.....of course he only works 2 days a week. The school alternates classes every other day, with A days and B days. On A days he gets out at 2:00 and on B days he gets out at 11:40.....geez, that barely gives me time to get a shower.

ANYWAY, That is entirely too early in my opinion.

OK, back to the story. Yesterday he asks if his friend Sam can come over so they can "hang out" and practice for their band. You would just LOVE their music. The genre is called Grind Core. It really is lovely. Actually, lovely isn't really the right adjective. But it is loud. There is a lot of bass, (did I mention it is loud?), drums, major guitar playing and vocals that sound like ...hhmmm.... how to describe the vocals.....if you make your voice as low as possible, growl , and make noises that sound like blah rahra, la ra oo ou, then perhaps you know what I'm talking about. I think I have a video of it somewhere. If I can find it and get CK to talk me through how to add it to this post I'll let you enjoy the experience yourself. I've checked out the lyrics. I think the idea is to sound as bad and incoherent as possible while singing about random nothingness....meanwhile, your audience thinks you are singing about awful stuff. Example-one of their songs is about a toaster that is toasting your bread. .....did I just hear you ask me why? Who knows. I guess it makes as much sense as "Get off the Bus Gus, Gotta new plan Stan, Don't gotta be coy Roy....". You get the picture.

Sorry. I know you are all extremely disappointed but I can't find the video. However, all it not lost. I did find some pictures of their first "gig". These pictures are from April 2007. He plays lead guitar and is also doing vocals in the top right picture. JM doesn't look like that anymore (thankfully). His hair got about 6 inches longer than it is in the pictures but a few months ago he cut it all off---almost buzz cut. About a month after that he shaved the goatee off. he really is extremely handsome now. (Really). In these pictures he is 15 years old...I know...he looks A LOT older.

OH yeah, I was talking about yesterday.

So, I say "yes", Sam may come over. I allow him to have sleepovers on school nights, (I know..BAD MOTHER). But as long as he gets up without problem and gets his work done and doesn't sleep during class (again) it's ok.

They are here for a while, eat dinner, (lucky for Sam, they picked a night where I actually cooked instead of giving them Hot Pockets)---(or was that lucky?). Anyway they ask if they can spend the night at Sam's house. They have a ride.....remember, JM is still car-less since his last "minor-mishap". He'll probably be licence -less after he goes to court on Dec 18. I know I mentioned this before but just a side note (ever realize that most of my posts are side-notes?), but did I tell you that our auto insurance went from $1,200 yearly to approx $6,500---thank you JM.

OK, I say they can go to Sam's. "Bob" comes to give them a ride. I usually call to check up, but trying to give him the benefit of the doubt I didn't. This happened sometime around 8:00 PM.
At about 10:00 PM Sam's mom calls me and asks if she may speak to Sammy....hhhmmm. So I take it they aren't there? I tell her that, then I tell her I'll text him and see what is going on.

here are the texts:

Me- Did you get to Sam's?
JM-Yeah, we're fine. We might go to Bob's but not for long.
Me-Are you at Sam's now?
JM-We're just leaving now.--- (notice how is is skirting around the truth)
Me-Leaving Sam's house, or leaving to GO to Sam's house?
JM-Leaving Sam's, but we won't be late.
Me- You are lying. (I hate using that word, but I KNEW!) Where are you now so I can come and get you.
JM-I'm not lying.
Me-I just spoke to Sam's mom. She called to speak to him. WHERE ARE YOU?

long pause

Me-"I re-send last message."
JM-Sam just called his mom. We're at Cory's friend, Bob's house.
Me- Call me NOW

20 seconds later the phone rings.

Me-Where does Bob live?
(pause)
Me-Where does Bob live?
JM- off of Altee Road (5 minutes away)
Me- You have exactly 15 minutes to either be here or at Sam's or I am going to come there and bring you home myself. It's late. your brother is in bed and I promise it will not be pretty.
JM-There's no way I can get there in 15 minutes.
Me-Fine-I'm coming right now.
JM-Wait, We'll be there in 15 min.
Me-I'm going to call Sam's mom and if you aren't there in 15 minutes, you can plan on being home for a long time.
JM-We'll be there. Bye

(wonder why I have the feeling that after he hung up he had a few more choice words to say???)

Anyway, I called Sam's mom to confirm and they actually got there before she and I hung up.

2-3 min later I get a text:

JM-We're at Sam's now.
Me- Thank you. I love you. Good Night.

(hhmmm, he must have forgotten to hit send for his "You're welcome. I love you too. Good night" text.)

And THAT my friends, is why Mother's of Teenager's Know Why Some Animals Eat Their Young.

Maybe I should have had smaller young's. There is no way my wife will be able to eat that much. So far my oldest is not doing bad. We know the youngest will be eaten first. Last night it went like this:
Is your homework all finshed?
Yes.
All of it?
Well some of it.
Is everything that is due tomorrow finished?
Yes.
And it is ready to be turned in?
No, I was going to finish it in class tomorrow.
Then the answer is no, right?
Yea I guess so.

Someone get me a fork.

Greg C....I have that conversation with my youngest at least once a week!

Mrs P....Whatever you do...NEVER say never. However, from what I can see, you are on the right track. But you just never know.

He's Not ADHDhe m(my husband) dresses conservative and they say kids want to be different. ET's husband dressed a bit like a punker with piercings and tatoos....their 13 year old son dresses preppy! You just never know! Good Luck!

Oh man I feel for you. I am so glad I'm not going through anything like that anymore. I won't even tell you the conversations I've had to endure with my daughter. (still do) Your's was nice in comparrison. But then, your son really does love you, even if he does forget to hit the send button sometimes.

You handled that situation well.

I can laugh because it's not my kid.

Edie- You know, I am lucky because I do know that he really does love me...however, I'm not 100% possitive he "forgot" to hit the send button".

CK-yes you can laugh because I will be laughing hysterically in 10-12 years when CiCi brings home someone similar----who knows what the kids will look like then! Or even MORE outrageously, GiGi will go on a rebellious streak!! I know you say it will never happen....but really, remember....NEVER SAY NEVER. You can forbid her to see him but that will make him more appealing. And if she wants to see him....she will. You can take away her car, her phone privledges, internet and even home school her and keep her locked in her room, but if she wants to see him....she will. Wonder if he'll have his nose pierced. WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Someone last week told me that the only way they survived raising their children was the shed in the garden..."We even slipped food in there once and a while for them"...(they were joking...geesh...)

I'm not looking forward to those moments.

And here I thought having boys meant the teen years would be a breeze....HA!

I would have made him come home too, and not be allowed out again for a LONG time. :-)

Of course, yes that punishes you too "mom". Life is a bummer that way. *sigh*

I thought about that but Little brother had just gone to bed. He was awake when the phone rang and then worried about his brother until I knew exactly where he was.
Little brother is a huge worrier and I knew he wouldn't have gotten any sleep.
I decided that was more important at the time.

Notorious Missionary...hhmmm, we do have an attic. It's something to think about.

On Purpose....WAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

HaHa! That's quite an encouraging scenario you painted for CK. LOL! Like I said, SO glad I'm done! LOL!

I'm sure he *forgot* to hit send, I'm just sure of it! ;) lol.

Loud *sigh* of beentheredonethat. I feel for you! Our boys are now 24, and 22. Those teenage years were ROUGH sometimes. I don't think anything hurts more than being lied to.
I have a friend who was secretly following her daughter who was in a car driving down the road with her boyfriend- thing was she was forbidden to be with the boyfriend. So her Mom called her on the phone and the daughter lied saying she was somewhere other than sitting side by side in a car with boyfriend. CELLPHONES... they make spying on our kids... WONDERFUL...
Hang in there...
Oh by the way. Our oldest son played drums, and the youngest elec guitar. I FULLY understand teenage music; except ours played the FLOOD (jars of clay) and stuff like that. I REALLY miss it now! I LOVED hearing them play. I would have loved to have seen the video!

S.O.P.Shed-I agree about the lying. He AND his friends know that I am pretty easy going and don't give them too hard of a time about too many things EXCEPT lying.
I got the full blown apology today.
I gave him my Gone With The Wind quote,"You're like the thief who isn't sorry that he stole something but he's VERY sorry he's going to jail".
His response, "Mom, that was last year and you KNOW I said I'd never take anything again that isn't mine". I guess he missed vocab class when they taught the word "Metaphor"....sigh
When I find the video I'll post it....you just MIGHT like it. Most people will hate it.

Raising teenagers is still too fresh for me to laugh at this post. (I still have ONE) I hate conflict and it seems to go with the territory while they grow up. Thankfully not ALL the time. Go YOU for being diligent to check up and follow through. The experts tell us that they like having boundaries. Harumph. The experts bneed to tell them that. ; )

Ugh...I have teens. With a garage band. And reading about what goes on isn't all that funny. You have the kind of situations this post is about and then there;s the over-acheiving daughter who last night while finishing up her sci fair project ran out of double-sided tape. I'm glad Walgreen's is open til late and that they didn't ming my jammies....sigh

Two of my three teens are out of the house now and there are days when I miss the lies and half-truthes too. About as much as I miss no drugs during childbirth. LOL
